ENDOCRINOLOGY

Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that deals with Endocrine glands and Hormones. Hormones are substances that are released from Endocrine glands into the bloodstream. The word hormone is derived from the Greek hormao meaning ‘I excite or arouse’. Hormones have an impact on sleep, weight, mood, stress, temperature, growth, fertility and many more aspects of life.

There are many glands in the body. All glands are not endocrine glands. The most important endocrine glands are:

  • Hypothalamus
  • Pituitary gland
  • Thyroid gland
  • Parathyroid glands
  • Adrenal glands
  • Pancreas
  • Ovaries
  • Testicles
  • Pineal gland

WHY SHOULD YOU SEE AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST AND NOT JUST A GENERAL PHYSICIAN FOR YOUR ENDOCRINE PROBLEMS?

An Endocrinologist is a Specialist who has studied in great detail about all the hormones and the conditions associated with them. He/she is up-to-date with the latest treatment options available.  When conventional treatment fails, one needs personalized treatment plans, which can be provided by an Endocrinologist. In the presence of certain conditions and complications, an Endocrinologist would know what treatments plans need to be avoided/used.

WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS THAT COME UNDER ENDOCRINOLOGY?

Some of the most common problems faced in the society come under the purview of Endocrinology. To list a few:
